Who Were Ruth & Boaz?
Ruth was a Moabite widow who chose to remain loyal to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the deaths of their husbands. Instead of returning to her homeland, Ruth embraced Naomi’s people and, more importantly, Naomi’s God.
Boaz was a respected landowner in Bethlehem known for his integrity, generosity, and obedience to God’s law. As a close relative of Naomi’s late husband, he qualified to serve as a kinsman-redeemer, a family protector who could redeem property and provide security for a widow.
Their story is more than a beautiful love story. It is a story of faith, redemption, loyalty, and God’s providence. Through Ruth and Boaz, we see that God often writes His greatest stories through ordinary acts of faithfulness.
Their Story
When Naomi returned to Bethlehem after losing her husband and sons, Ruth faithfully accompanied her, declaring her commitment with the well-known words:
“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16, NIV)
To provide for Naomi, Ruth gathered leftover grain in Boaz’s fields. Boaz noticed her diligence, humility, and devotion to Naomi. Rather than taking advantage of her vulnerable situation, he treated her with kindness, protected her, and ensured she had more than enough to eat.
Following Naomi’s guidance, Ruth respectfully approached Boaz regarding his role as a kinsman-redeemer. Boaz responded honorably, making sure to follow God’s law before pursuing marriage.
In time, Boaz redeemed Naomi’s family property, married Ruth, and together they became the great-grandparents of King David and part of the family line of Jesus Christ.
Their story reminds us that God’s plans often unfold through faithful obedience, integrity, and genuine love.
Their Strengths

Unlike many couples in Scripture, Ruth and Boaz are not remembered for significant relational failures. Instead, their story highlights the blessings that come from living with integrity and trusting God’s guidance.

Rather than allowing hardship to define them, they remained faithful to God.
