Who Were Isaac & Rebekah?
Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah, became the next generation through whom God would fulfill His covenant promise. Rebekah was chosen to become Isaac’s wife after Abraham’s servant faithfully sought God’s direction in prayer.
Their marriage began with God’s guidance, prayer, and a willingness to trust His plan. Together they experienced love, answered prayer, and the blessing of family. Yet their relationship also faced challenges that remind us how important communication, unity, and wise parenting are within a marriage.
Their story teaches us that even relationships that begin with God’s blessing require intentional effort to remain united.
Their Story
As Abraham grew older, he desired for Isaac to marry a woman who honored God. He sent his trusted servant to find a wife among his relatives rather than among the surrounding nations.
The servant prayed specifically for God’s guidance, asking that the right woman would offer water not only to him but also to his camels. Rebekah did exactly that, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and a servant’s heart.
Isaac welcomed Rebekah as his wife, and Scripture tells us that he loved her.
Years later, when they were unable to have children, Isaac prayed for Rebekah, and God answered by blessing them with twin sons, Esau and Jacob.
However, as their sons grew, Isaac favored Esau while Rebekah favored Jacob. Instead of working together, they allowed favoritism and secrecy to divide their family. Rebekah even encouraged Jacob to deceive Isaac in order to receive his father’s blessing, creating conflict that affected generations to come.
Their story beautifully illustrates both the blessings of seeking God’s direction and the consequences of allowing favoritism and poor communication to replace unity.
Their Strengths
1. Their Relationship Began with Prayer
Before Isaac and Rebekah ever met, God’s guidance was sought through prayer.
Their marriage reminds us that inviting God into our decisions is one of the strongest foundations for any relationship.

Issac Loved His Wife
Genesis tells us something beautiful and unique:
“Isaac… married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her.”
Love wasn’t merely assumed, it was expressed.

Issac Prayed for Rebekah
When they struggled with infertility, Isaac didn’t become bitter or distant.
He prayed for his wife.
Rather than carrying the burden alone, they trusted God together.

Isaac favored Esau.
Rebekah favored Jacob.

Rather than openly discussing Isaac’s blessing, Rebekah developed a plan behind his back.
Although her intentions may have been influenced by God’s earlier promise concerning Jacob, the method she chose involved deception.

Family Conflict Had Lasting Consequences
The deception between Jacob and Esau led to broken relationships, fear, and separation.

Isaac and Rebekah remind us that healthy relationships begin with seeking God’s direction, but they also require continual communication, honesty, and unity.
Their story encourages us to:

Avoid favoritism or comparison within the family.
Choose honesty over manipulation.
